LHC is Having Teething Issues

Apparently I missed some of the recent LHC news, it looks like it is going to be switched off for a while…

What happened to the Big Bang machine?

The fault that has shut down the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be hugely disappointing for scientists and engineers following the successful “start-up” of the experiment.

[...]

The failure on 19 September – described as a “massive” magnet quench – certainly seems dramatic: it caused the temperatures in about 100 of the LHC’s super-cooled magnets to soar by as much as 100C.

The fire brigade had to be called after a tonne of liquid helium leaked out into the LHC tunnel.

On the Pursuit of the Beginnings of the Solar System

Apparently the Europeans think it’s not enough to get some rubble out of a quarry. They now want to send a space craft to pick up some rubble from an asteroid.
Europe plans asteroid sample grab

European scientists and engineers are working on a potential new mission to bring back material from an asteroid.

The venture, known as Marco Polo, could launch in the next decade, and would be designed to learn more about how our Solar System evolved.

The plan is to select a small asteroid – less than 1km across – near Earth and send a spacecraft there to drill for dust and rubble for analysis.

Bejeweled, Warcraft Combine to Form World’s Most Addictive Game

Bejeweled, Warcraft Combine to Form World’s Most Addictive Game | Game | Life from Wired.com

Where will PopCap Games’ megahit puzzle game Bejeweled pop up next? Would you believe … World of Warcraft?

A version of the match-three game is set to launch next Thursday within the World of Warcraft MMO (massively multiplayer online), letting players kill time with puzzles during raids and long stints farming rare items.

The added level of addiction will no doubt entertain many World of Warcraft fans, but the real story here is how the game went from a student’s pet project to solid evidence that PopCap doesn’t subscribe to traditional ideas of corporate hegemony.

The World of Warcraft version of Bejeweled began life as one hobbyist’s personal mod.

Michael Fromwiller, a student at San Jose State University in California, used his love of PopCap’s puzzler to combat a typical, if paradoxical, WoW problem: The addictive game is often boring.

It times like these that I think to myself that I quit playing WoW in favour of leading a real life.

Hitchhiker’s Guide in the News?

A new volume of the Hitchhiker’s Guide? First thought: Weeeee! Second thought: Wait a minute, Douglas Adams died, did he not? Definitely a dilemma: On the one hand I really like the series, and I would love to see another volume. On the other hand I do not think it can be the same without Douglas Adams.

“Hitchhiker’s Guide” series to ride again

Children’s author Eoin Colfer is to write a sixth novel in the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series, seven years after the death of its creator Douglas Adams, publishers Penguin said on Wednesday.

Vice Fund

I’m trying to figure out if the Vice Fund is a joke:

The Vice Fund invests in companies, both domestic and foreign, engaged in the aerospace and defense industries, owners and operators of casinos and gaming facilities, manufacturers of gaming equipment such as slot machines, manufacturers of cigarettes and other tobacco products, and brewers, distillers, vintners and producers of other alcoholic beverages.

We believe that there are numerous investment opportunities in these sectors which have been largely overlooked by other funds. While many of the most widely held and well-known mutual fund families invest in companies doing business in these sectors, NO OTHER FUND CONCENTRATES SOLELY ON THESE FOUR SECTORS.

What’s surprising is the fund’s down almost 20% this year; I would’ve thought vice would be more profitable.

What to Expect When You’re Aborting

I’m 23. I’m knocked up. And I don’t want to keep it. You can fuck yourself, Judd Apatow.

Blog I’ve been reading for a week or two. It is, if nothing else, an interesting read.
