Sun Ultra 20 M2 Memory Upgrade

A while ago I wrote what I thought about the Sun Ultra 20 M2, Sun’s entry-level workstation:

If you do decide to buy the base machine, you’re going to want to upgrade the video card (the onboard video is okay, but the quality isn’t great and it’s obscure enough that I’ve had problems with it and Linux). You’ll probably want to upgrade the RAM, too. Watch out, though — the Ultra 20 M2 takes unbuffered ECC RAM, which is expensive and hard to find.

Turns out I was wrong about the memory; while Sun claims you can only use ECC RAM, it turns out that you can use non-ECC RAM too. I put 2GB of Kingston ValueRAM into my Ultra 20 M2 and so far it’s working perfectly. I wish I’d done this ages ago!

    Hi,

I also own Sun Ultra 20 M1 workstation. I love my machine and its perfect for what i do (java development), i use Solaris and it runs very quickly.

I currently have 2Gigs of ram 1X2 and want to add another 2gigs of ram.
I am curious , i found out that what i have is PC3200,DDR1, 400Mhz, unbuffered and unregistered ram.
Do you think i should buy all 4 new sticks if i want to try a different kind of DIMMS?

    Hi All,

For the SUN Ultra 20 (M1), I have tried a common memory
    2 x 1Gb PC3200 184pin 400Mhz DDR2 DIMM, 2.5v CL3 non-ECC, Unbuffered and system will not boot. Now has anyone tried the kingston memories?

You can even put some DDR2-800 MHz (non ECC) in your Ultra 20M2. Maybe this (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5198991&tstart=0) discussion is a good starting point for everyone, who wants to do some modifications on the Ultra 20M2.

Personally I’ve got the Corsair PC2-6400 memory, but without ECC. It works fine, but normally when I boot my Ultra 20M2, the BIOS displays some information about CPU and memory clock. with that Corsair memory, some information is missing. But the Solaris, Linux and Windows work fine.

So, would DDR2-800 ECC like KVR800D2E5/2G also work? Maybe I will try that type of memory, If I can return it, in case of problems.

    Hi All,

For the Ultra 20 (M1), I’ve also tried some cheap 2 x 1Gb PC3200 184pin 400Mhz DDR2 DIMM, 2.5v CL3 non-ECC, Unbuffered (LOW DENSITY this time). The system boots well. The OS also loads an passes tests. But after a while my system freezes (or reboots, or Blue screen of death…).
I couldn’t figure out the problem, even that I upgraded the BIOS and tested the memory on different Ultra 20 as well, same results yet. So no luck….
