Aperture System Requirements
With the release of Aperture 1.5, Apple has added, among other things, support for more graphics cards, including the Intel GMA 950 and the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra. This means Aperture will run on any Intel-based Mac, as well as any Power Mac G5. Woo hoo!
What really caught my eye, though, was the minimum memory requirements for Aperture:
- 1GB of RAM
- 2GB of RAM required for the Mac Pro
Um, what? Why would the Mac Pro require 2GB of RAM? Sometimes I just can’t figure out what goes on inside of Apple.

Being a pro user of Aperture on a 17″ mbpro, i agree with them and the 2gb limit.
I shoot with a canon 1dmkIIn and a canon 1ds, and you need all the grunt you can get to process 50mb tiff files.
Seriously os x runs like a dream with 2gb ram anyway
What I find baffling is why Aperture requires 2GB of RAM on the Mac Pro, but only 1GB of RAM on other machines. What’s special about Aperture on the Mac Pro? Why does it require the extra gigabyte of memory?
Apple does suggest 2GB of RAM for Aperture for all machines, though.
I’ve asked the same Q, i think it’s a typo somewhere as the Mac pro has a weaker GFX card (shared mem if my memory serves me correct)
If they were talking about the MacBook and the Mac mini (both of which have integrated graphics cards that use shared memory), then that would make sense. Mac Pros have excellent graphics cards, though, so that can’t be the reason.
Maybe something about multi-processing task and better ram pipeline in order to optimize parallel computation. Of course if you have the ram in pairs. … Maybe
